About the BREVARD WATERCOLOR SOCIETY

Our mission is to promote the beauty of watercolor painting and enrich the quality of life in our community through workshops, education and exhibitions.

Brevard Watercolor Society was established in 1995. It is a non-profit 501©(3) organization, sponsored in part by the Brevard Board of County Commissioners, through the Brevard Cultural Alliance, Inc. It has a current membership of almost 200 members. The watercolor society, its members and volunteers, are dedicated to promoting the beauty of watercolor painting and enriching the quality of life in our community through workshops, education, and exhibitions.

BWS frequently partners with other organizations to display themed watercolor exhibits and shows. Previous exhibits have included Watercolors of Olde Brevard which showcased the history of Brevard County, Celebration of 40 Years of the Kennedy Space Center which highlighted NASA’s flight into space, using their photos as reference material, and the King Center juried exhibit titled In the Still of the Moment which was an awe-inspiring ode to the still life theme. It’s annual watercolor show at the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge is judged and features Florida fauna and wildlife. The exhibit is at the wildlife refuge visitor’s center from December through January when bird watchers from around the world converge to enjoy the Refuge’s winter bird variety.
BWS holds an annual Splash of Watercolor Art Show at the Azan Shrine Temple in February. It is billed as the largest display and sale of original watercolor paintings in Brevard, featuring original watercolor paintings from many of our members, painting demonstrations, raffles, silent auctions, Artist Marketplace where our members offer matted prints ready for framing, greeting cards and more, and the Starving Artist Cafe where a varied lunch menu is served. This judged show and art event is always a sure bet to draw a crowd. Admission and parking are free.

Art Scholarships are offered to students with funds raised by the Brevard Watercolor Society. Awards of $500 scholarships are offered each Spring and Fall on behalf of the Society through the Eastern Florida State College Foundation. Online donations for this program are accepted at the bottom of the page. For more information, please contact Barbara Rios at (321) 446-6154.
BWS presents four 3-Day Workshops per year featuring acclaimed artists covering a variety of themes and watercolor techniques. This is a great opportunity to acquire new ideas and techniques and to work one-on-one and in a group setting with some world-class watercolorists.

Many of our members teach classes and workshops throughout Brevard County for all ability levels. A list of teachers is available here, and at BWS general meetings. BWS Meetings include Watercolor Demos by workshop instructors and are held on the second Saturday of January, March, May, September, and November from 1-3 pm. One-time visitors are welcome to attend to see if they are interested in joining. The location is Satellite Beach Civic Center Auditorium, 565 Cassia Blvd, Satellite Beach. The fee is $5.00. Members are admitted free of charge.

Membership is open to interested parties who are at least 18 years of age. There are no residency requirements. Membership runs by the calendar year of January through December. Membership dues must be paid before entering paintings in Splash of Watercolor. Individual membership is $45.00 and family membership is $50.00. Student membership is also available to current students with a student ID for $25.00 per year. A copy of our quarterly BWS News will be printed and mailed to members for an additional $5.00 per year. An interest in the society is the only requirement to become a member.

Membership offers the opportunity of learning through demos, monthly free mini workshops, and 3-day workshops offered at a discounted fee. Opportunities to exhibit, enjoy Plein Air painting outings, attend art events and trips, and to enjoy the camaraderie & friendship of other artists are invaluable benefits available with a Brevard Watercolor Society Membership.
